Volunteer for us
The Pirate Club has a large team of volunteers, without whom we would not be able to provide the scope of activities that we are currently able to. We organise social events and training for our volunteers, and really treasure the help that they give us.
We currently need volunteers for the following positions:
Boat Club helpers:
We run children's kayaking/canoeing sessions every Tuesday and Thursday from 5pm to 7pm, and also every Saturday from 1pm to 4pm. We need people to help to supervise the children on the water. These sessions are currently quite small (usually eight or less children) but we like to have a high ratio of helpers to children. There will be opportunities in the future for helpers to receive training in child protection, First Aid, Kayak Instructor training and Disablity Equality Training. No particular experience is needed for this post but it would be helpful if you liked boats, water and young people.
Narrow Boat Skippers/Crew:
We provide subsidized boat trips for outside groups on our two 71ft Narrow boats. Every trip needs a fully qualified Skipper and a crew member who may or may not be qualified. We ask people to join us as unqualified Narrow boat crew and help out on trips, then if they stay with us and do enough trips we can provide the training so that they can become Narrow boat skippers. The training is expensive and costs us quite a lot of money to provide, so we have to ensure that people will enjoy their role and are dedicated to it before we offer this training. You can simply stay as unqualified crew if you wish - and there will still be opportunities for learning about the boats, and also for further development such as 1st Aid training and other courses.
Admin workers:
As we have got larger it has become more and more difficult to keep up with the growing admin task that our centre provides. We need people to help us with a wide variety of different things from answering the phone and greeting groups, to more skilled work such as using databases and spreadsheets. We will always offer what support we can, but do need people who can work without too much supervision.
