Thameswatch

The ThamesWatch competition will be taking place during June. The aim is to get as many children between the ages of 5 and 10 in the London and Greater London areas to explore Bird-Life on the Thames. We want children to embrace the beauties of the River, whether its on a school or club trip, or with Mum and Dad. We will be releasing a form that will include a tick list of the Top Ten Water Birds and a list of other species that can be seen on the river. Its a lot of fun and the children will get to explore some interesting places that have a revelance to what they are learning at school, or at brownies/boys brigade etc.

The Club is on the verge of expansion and reinvention as a centre providing full access to the canalside and all activities for both able-bodied and disabled members alike and providing opportunity and adventure for today’s children and young people as well as offering facilities for the wider community.

At the moment the club is closed for building and refurbishment, but with grateful thanks to:

LB Camden, Barratt’s, The Big Lottery, Bridge House Trust, John Lyons Charity, Aldenham Club, Rotary Club, Jack Petchey, Help a London Child, Wogen, Peabody Trust, Camden Play Service, and the Rose Foundation.

It will reopen in winter 2007 with a new annexe providing lift access to the canal and a large extension of our main hall and amongst our proposed activities will be:

Water Based Activities and Sports, including Kids boat club using canoes & kayaks, rowing boats & bell boating etc.

The Narrowboats will be fully used as well offering trips out, residential trips and Junior Skipper training for the youngsters.

Youth Club sessions and Indoor pursuits, IT sessions and Arts & crafts, Music, Table tennis, pool etc.

The Club is aimed at 8 – 18 year olds and we will be introducing a new member’s agreement on behaviour, where the parents are expected to be responsible for their children's behavior at the Club.

We are developing an adult section to the canoe club, which will be a bit of fun and hopefully will increase the numbers of volunteers at the Club as a whole. We are planning to institute a Girl’s night with a good range of activities and trips away.

Family days will be an element in the plan with narrowboat trips and canoeing all together.

Plus we will run Activities for Special Needs & Disability groups both water based & indoors

Plus the development of the hall hire for community groups.

As well as hoping to attract a whole range of new members and users, the Club will be seeking new personnel to work alongside the existing professionals to provide these facilities; If you are interested in becoming involved in this exciting new project, either by applying for a position on the staff, or by offering yourself as a volunteer, the Pirate Club would very much like to hear from you.

Jim the pirate has left the Pirate Club and headed for dry land. A long-serving narrowboat skipper who put in many hours of time, he gave our boats the maintenance and attention they've needed and has also taken out countless dozens of groups. His jovial character and dedication will be greatly missed. Many thanks to Jim and we all wish him the best of luck with life ashore.

Over this year's summer scheme six people passed their British Canoe Union 1 Star kayak qualification - congratulations all round - and thanks to the efforts fo volunteer Christine West. Now a couple are moving on to 2 Star level.

Narrowboats winter maintenance a success! Thanks to Giles and Jim for organising everything and all the volunteers who helped out.
